Reset a forgotten password
The Nebulis login page has no "forgot password" link. Anyone who could reach the page could use it to take over your account. Instead, you reset the password on the computer that runs the Nebulis server. It is quick and works without an internet connection.
Before you start
You need to be at the computer that runs the Nebulis server, or be able to open a terminal on it (for example over remote desktop). You cannot reset a password from a phone, a tablet, or a browser on another computer.
Reset a password on Windows
Stop the Nebulis service
Right-click the Nebulis icon in the system tray and choose Stop Service. This step is optional. If you skip it, the reset tool waits a moment for the database to be free.
Open Command Prompt as administrator
On the computer that runs Nebulis, press the Windows key and type
cmd. Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator. Without administrator rights the reset fails with “attempt to write a readonly database”.Find your username
Run this command to list the accounts:
"C:\Program Files\Nebulis\nebulis.exe" --list-usersIt prints each account's username and role:
Accounts: - jsmith (admin) "Jamie Smith"Reset the password
Run this command. Replace
<username>with the name from the list:"C:\Program Files\Nebulis\nebulis.exe" --reset-password <username>It prints a new random password:
Password reset for "jsmith" (admin). New password: 6lPRf6CQdCFW Log in with that, then change it under Settings. If you would rather choose the password yourself, add it after the username:
"C:\Program Files\Nebulis\nebulis.exe" --reset-password <username> MyNewPassw0rdStart the service again
If you stopped the service, right-click the tray icon and choose Start Service.
Sign in and change the password
Open Nebulis in your browser and sign in with the new password. Then go to Settings → Account and set a password you will remember.
It says "No database found"
The tool looks for the database at C:\ProgramData\Nebulis\data\nebulis.db. If you moved your data somewhere else, point the tool at it with DATA_DIR, then run the reset again:
set DATA_DIR=D:\NebulisData
"C:\Program Files\Nebulis\nebulis.exe" --reset-password <username>The account list is empty
The database has no accounts yet. Open Nebulis in your browser. With no accounts, Nebulis lets you in so you can create the first one.
I use Nebulis from another device
The reset still has to run on the computer that hosts the server. Go to that computer, or connect to it with remote desktop, and follow the steps above.
